Khalid’s next court date?

Umar Khalid’s next court hearing is scheduled for September 23, 2024. The Delhi High Court has instructed the trial court not to pass any final order on framing charges against him until this date(MoneyControl)(Rediff).

Umar Khalid, a former JNU student and activist, recently marked four years in jail without trial under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He was arrested in September 2020 in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots, which erupted amid protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Khalid faces charges related to allegedly orchestrating the violence through a larger conspiracy involving several co-accused. Multiple bail pleas have been denied, with courts citing the seriousness of the charges and his alleged involvement in planning the protests that escalated into riots.

Despite filing charges in 2020 and 2022, the trial proceedings have been delayed multiple times. In September 2024, a special court allowed the prosecution to proceed with arguments on framing charges, but the Delhi High Court asked the trial court to hold off on finalizing these charges until later in the month.

Khalid’s case is further complicated by testimonies from protected witnesses who claim he helped plan disruptive activities, such as road blockages (“chakka jams”) during the protests.

Khalid’s legal team continues to challenge the charges, with his bail application pending in the Supreme Court since April 2023, though progress has been slow due to repeated adjournments. His case remains a focal point in discussions on the use of UAPA and political dissent in India(https://www.oneindia.com/)(MoneyControl)(Rediff).
