Francis Scott Key, a lawyer and amateur poet, found himself in a special position to witness this critical battle. He went on a British ship to negotiate the release of an American prisoner and was held there until the battle ended.

As dawn broke on September 14, Key saw an amazing sight: the American flag still flying over Fort McHenry. Overwhelmed with relief and patriotism, he began to write a poem that captured the essence of that moment.
The opening lines, “Oh say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,” show his awe and pride at the sight of the resilient flag.
Key’s poem, first called “Defence of Fort M’Henry,” was later matched with a popular British tune, “To Anacreon in Heaven,” composed by John Stafford Smith. This blend of heartfelt words and a memorable melody quickly became popular.
