Americans Face New Social Security Rule Deadline,
Americans have only a few weeks left before a significant change to Social Security’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program goes into effect. By the end of September 2024,
a new rule regarding the treatment of “in-kind support and maintenance” (ISM) will be implemented. This change affects how the Social Security Administration calculates SSI benefits for low-income elderly and disabled individuals.
Previously, if an SSI recipient received help with housing, food, or other basic needs from family or friends, their benefits could be reduced under ISM rules.
The new policy will relax this requirement, potentially increasing monthly payments for beneficiaries and reducing the administrative burden on both recipients and the SSA itself.
This adjustment aims to streamline the benefit process, allowing more vulnerable people to receive the full financial support they need without penalty for receiving external assistance.
With around 70 million people depending on Social Security, including SSI, the reform could have widespread implications.
The deadline to be aware of is September 30, 2024, after which these changes will officially be in place, marking a significant shift in how SSI benefits are managed and distributed(AARP)(SSA).
